Ferrari's success in Australia would come despite Sainz having had surgery for appendicitis and missing the race in Saudi Arabia just two weeks prior. The Spaniard challenged for the lead from the race start, using his DRS effectively to close in on polesitter Max Verstappen and overtake into Turns 9 and 10. The Red Bull soon retired due to brake failure, giving Sainz a clear shot at a third career victory, one he did not waste. Clever use of the undercut through the pit stops earned Leclerc second position, sealing Ferrari's first 1-2 finish since the opening race of the 2022 season. It also extended their record at the most successful team at Albert Park with a tenth victory at the circuit.
