Unveiled at the Finali Mondiali held at the Mugello Circuit in October, the Ferrari 296 Challenge is the ninth model to be launched in the history of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pireli and the first car in the single-make series to sport a Twin Turbo V6 engine. Inspired by the Ferrari 296 GT3, the 296 Challenge leverages the wealth of expertise gained from its racing counterpart, catering to aspiring drivers eager to carve their path in the world of GT racing from the 2024 season onwards.
The Ferrari 296 Challenge marks a significant step forward for the Prancing Horse’s single-make series. The competitors’ progressive improvement in quality and competitiveness meanst that the 296 Challenge development team were able to make even more radical modifications to the original model than would have been the case in the past, fully leveraging Ferrari’s unparalleled experience in the motorsport world.
The biggest change over the 296 GTB, in line with the development of the 296 GT3, is that the hybrid powertrain was removed to reduce weight and complexity. The electric motor and high-voltage battery were also eliminated , while the power output was increased to 700 cv, largely contributed to by the development of a more linear exhaust line in the upper part of the engine compartment, , resulting in a record specific power output for the segment - 234 cv/l. In terms of aerodynamics, the Challenge car adopts the extreme solutions of the 296 GT3, yielding unprecedented downforce figures. The braking system has also undergone a complete overhaul, redesigned with the first-ever adoption of new CCM-R PLUS discs, which use technology derived from the most extreme track applications. The introduction of this innovation, together with the circuit-specific evolution of the ABS EVO Track used on the 296 GTB, has delivered previously unimaginable braking performance and repeatability.
The 296 Challenge showcases an impressive ability to generate 870 kg of downforce at 250 km/h when the spoiler is set to its maximum angle of attack. This is an 18% increase in downforce compared to the 488 Challenge Evo. The car’s aero design focused not just on the pursuit of performance, but also on driveability. To achieve both of these goals, the car’s sensitivity to variations in downforce and the aero balance to the car’s ground clearance, yaw and roll were minimized.
The 296 Challenge is equipped with all-new Pirelli tyres, developed over a year-long rigorous a design phase that involved the use of advanced simulation technologies and a variety of different verification loops on international circuits. The use of a wider front wheel with an 11” channel allowed Pirelli to develop a tyre geared towards better turn-in grip, lower wear, and greater consistency over the course of a race. The focus on performance extends to the cockpit, where the central tunnel has been reimagined with a new control layout, ensuring that the vital functions are always within easy reach for the driver. A notable enhancement can be seen in the rear bumper, which, unlike the 296 GTB, now features an optimised vertical exterior profile to reduce drag. Two vents have been strategically added at the sides to channel air out of the rear wheel arches and into the car’s wake, optimising the efficiency of the rear underbody and reducing overall drag, thereby boosting overall aero efficiency.
This fine scale model of the Ferrari 296 Challenge at 1:8 scale has been handcrafted and finished in our workshops with the co-operation and assistance of Ferrari regarding original finishes, materials, archive imagery and drawings. The use of original CAD has allowed us to perfectly recreate every detail at scale. Furthermore, the prototype model has undergone detailed scrutiny by the Ferrari's engineering and design teams to ensure complete accuracy of representation.
The Ferrari 296 Challenge is limited to just 199 pieces at 1:8 scale.
