McLaren P1
Marking 10 Years Since The Unveiling of McLaren's first Ultimate Series Car
Ten years ago, at the Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris, McLaren Automotive previewed their first Ultimate Series car as a design study: the McLaren P1. A spiritual successor to the McLaren F1, the McLaren P1 was designed, engineered and built to be the best driver’s car in the world, pushing boundaries further than any of its rivals. McLaren sought to redefine the concept of the supercar, developing ground-breaking carbon fibre construction, advanced, Formula 1-style aerodynamics and pioneering high-performance hybrid powertrain technologies.

Five months later, the production version debuted at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The full production run of 375 cars was sold and allocated before the first was even delivered, such was the demand for the McLaren P1. No two examples were the same; each was custom-built to owner-specification in consultation with McLaren Special Operations (MSO). The cost of MSO features was additional to the £866,000 price of the car. Each car was hand-assembled at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, Surrey, UK, by a team of 82 technicians. The build process for a single car took 17 days, with total production ceasing in December 2015.
The McLaren P1 remains a stunning piece of automotive design, and a perfect example of McLaren’s ‘form follows function’ design philosophy. Every surface was designed to work; every part given the same aerodynamic consideration to maximise the car’s performance. The P1 was one of the most technically complex cars McLaren had ever created, with all the systems collaborating to deliver both performance and driver reward. As such, it was a showcase for the knowledge and passion of the engineering team that created it and the Formula 1 inspired technology from McLaren’s racing division.

Our journey of collaboration with McLaren started in 2007, when we began working alongside the McLaren F1 Team, producing scale replicas of its race cars. Ever since, Amalgam have been part of McLaren’s journey in becoming the British creator of luxury, high-performance sportscars and supercars, during which they have developed a deep knowledge and experience of the extraordinarily well designed and finely engineered cars created by McLaren. We have built over 125 models of the P1 at 1:8 scale and continue to offer limited edition models and bespoke builds for owners of the real car.
