McLaren MP4/6 (1991) Japanese GP
The MP4/6 proved somewhat of a risk for McLaren engine-wise, being fitted with a new V12 Honda unit that was longer, heavier and thirstier than the V10 which was to power many of McLaren’s rivals. However, it was a risk that paid off, which delivered the first four wins of the season to the Woking contender with Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger in the respective driving seats.*The season progressed with mixed success for McLaren and both car and engine package were refined, allowing for the team to regain their form from the Budapest race onwards. This lead soon flipped to rival Williams after a run of poor tyre choices, to be turned around by Senna at Suzuka, the final race of the season. This is a model of Senna’s car at that race, which secured his third and final driver’s world title. McLaren once again took the Constructors’ World Championship.
