McLaren Racing’s competitor for the 2022 FIA Formula 1 World Championship season, the McLaren MCL36 was designed to maintain the team’s trajectory back to the top of the motor racing pyramid. In the hands of Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo, the MCL36 was McLaren’s response to the new era of regulations that aimed to provide closer racing and more on-track action for fans.
Designed under the leadership of Technical Director James Key and produced by the team in Woking, led by Operations Director Piers Thynne, the MCL36 featured several striking and dramatic changes compared to the MCL35M. The return of ground-effect to Formula 1 changed the fundamental philosophy of the car and was part of new regulations aimed at improving racing by reducing the amount of disrupted airflow generated by the cars. The MCL36 was powered by the Mercedes-AMG F1 M13 E Performance which was integrated into the McLaren chassis and gearbox with support from Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth, UK.
The colours first carried by the team in the 1960s with team founder Bruce McLaren were retained for the 2022 season, with fan favourite Papaya continuing to lead the livery. Having debuted on the MCL35M’s Monaco livery in 2021 to fan acclaim, the bold Fluro Papaya featured on the MCL36 for the 2022 season, accented by New Blue.
Lando Norris entered his fourth season in Formula 1 with McLaren and looked to build on an exceptional 2021 season during which he achieved four podium finishes and claimed his first pole position. McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo entered his 12th season in Formula 1, and his second with McLaren. Pre-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya gave the team optimism for a competitive season, seemingly avoiding the 'porpoising' issues reported by other teams. However, due to mechanical issues, the team lost valuable pre-season optimisation time, with some of these frustratingly continuing throughout the season. The car did provide some key moments of pace on the track at a few of the European races such as the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and Hungarian Grand Prix, but this was not enough to finish above rivals, Alpine. Overall, the McLaren MCL36 was a reliable challenger, suffering only five retirements all year and covering 91.96% of the scheduled race distance.
McLaren ultimately lost their season-long battle with Alpine for fourth in the Constructors' Championship, as Norris scored points at seventeen races, and teammate Ricciardo at seven. Norris did provide McLaren's highest point of the season, earning the team's 494th podium finish with a third place at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola.
Overall, the MCL36 earned one podium, two fastest laps and scored 159 points, earning McLaren fifth place in the Constructors' Championship. Norris secured seventh place in the Drivers' Championship standings with 122 points, ahead of both Alpine drivers, whilst Ricciardo earned eleventh place with 37 points. Between the two drivers, 2,448 laps were driven, 440 tyres used and 805 pitstops taken across the 22 races in the season.
