Ferrari 275 GTB/4S NART Spider (1967) - Blu Scozia
Now one of the scarcest cars in existence, the 275 GTB/4S NART Spider was a roadgoing 2-seater spider version of the 275 GTB/4. the NART Spider was born of a direct request from Ferrari's North American dealer Luigi Chinetti to Sergio Scaglietti and Enzo Ferrari; Chinetti wanted to offer his buyers precisely what they wanted, a successor to the earlier 250 California Spider series. Whilst the name "NART" was never part of the Spider’s official designation, the cars were informally named “NART” Spiders and a cloisonné badge was installed with the team's logo on the rear of each car in reference to Chinetti's North American Racing Team, one of endurance racing’s most successful teams. Lending the NART name to the new car and embellishing it with a NART badge made it unique in Ferrari history. The first NART chassis was raced very successfully at Sebring, and it was later featured in the Steve McQueen film “The Thomas Crown Affair.” Another NART was ordered new by McQueen after he filmed the movie.
Armed with the same 300hp 4-cam, 3.2-liter V12 Tipo 226 engine in the GTB/4, as well as 5-speed gearbox, and 4-wheel independent suspension, the “NART” Spider was capable of serious speed on a racetrack. Road & Track described it as "the most satisfying sports car in the world" and recorded a 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) time of 6.7 seconds, a 1⁄4 mile (0.40 km) drag strip time of 14.7 seconds. and a top speed of 155 mph (249 km/h). Almost the entire Maranello racing technology suite was applied to the NART Spider, tried and tested in the 275 competition models, including a long nose bodywork, a torque tube driveline and the provision of a dry sump lubrication system.
Chinetti intended to order 25 NART Spiders from Scaglietti but low sales meant only 10 cars were built in 1967 and 1968, making each car incredibly rare. Originally listed at $14,400 retail, chassis 10709 was sold by RM Auctions for $27,500,000 in August 2013, making it the most expensive road car in the world at the time. It remains high on the list.
