Red Bull RB3 (2007)
The first Adrian Newey designed Red Bull car, the RB3, bore a resemblance to past Newey designed cars like the 2005 McLaren MP4-20. Driven by Mark Webber and David Coulthard, the RB3 had strong point scoring pace but sadly, like the McLaren, it was hampered by reliability issues. Problems included things as trivial as faulty brake pedals and notoriously jamming fuel-flaps but the most pressing reliability issue was the gearbox. In total, the RB3 retired on 14 occasions, including one double retirement in Bahrain.
Before the season even began however, controversy surrounded the RB3 and the Toro Rosso STR2 as both the Williams and Spyker teams claimed the cars were identical and had not been designed by their respective teams, having been designed by third-party subsidiary Red Bull Technologies. They claimed that this was a breach of the Formula 1 Concorde Agreement. The FIA declared the cars, and the operational methods to produce them, were legal.
Coulthard would be the most consistent points scorer, 14 in total, after top eight finishes in Spain, Valencia, Japan and China. The car’s best result was in the hands of Webber, however, as he took the final podium place in the European Grand Prix. He also scored points in the US and Belgium.
Overall, the RB3 scored a single podium and 24 Constructors’ Championship points, earning Red Bull Racing fifth place.
