Designed to push the boundaries of Ferrari’s own achievements, the 812 Superfast ushered in a new era in Ferrari 12-cylinder history, the power unit that had hailed the start of the Prancing Horse story 70 years prior in 1947. Intense research and development has been focused on utilising Ferrari’s wealth of track-derived engineering knowledge and the resulting 812 Superfast is designed to offer its drivers both benchmark performance across the board and the most exhilarating and rewarding driving experience possible. Building upon the invaluable legacies of the F12berlinetta and F12tdf, this was the fastest and most powerful series production car to originate from Maranello at its release.
The 812 Superfast’s output has been boosted to 800cv, 60 more than the F12berlinetta, whilst its torque figures also improved, up to 529 lb-ft from 508 lb-ft. The car powers itself from 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in an astounding 2.9 seconds and is capable of reaching 211mph (340km/h). To make maximum use of its power and to guarantee perfect weight distribution, the car exploits a highly evolved transaxle architecture that couples a front-mounted 6.5L V12 engine with a rear-mounted transmission. It is also the first Ferrari equipped with EPS (Electric Power Steering).
The 812 Superfast redefines the formal language of front-engine V12s with its new muscular, more aggressive design, though upon first glance it is clear that the exterior of the car continues to pull inspiration from the F12berlinetta. The car’s sculpted flanks, front diffusers and underbody all deliver significant aerodynamic improvements over its predecessor. Quad taillamps, inspired by Ferrari tradition, emphasise a design crafted around horizontal lines and give the 812 Superfast a broad, imposing stance without compromising on any practicality. Seen in silhouette, the car has a fastback sleekness, with a high tail reminiscent of the 1969 365 GTB4 ‘Daytona’. Contrary to its exterior, the 812 Superfast’s interior took its inspiration from the LaFerrari with its horizontal dashboard, looping stylishly around the central air vents for a sophisticated, sculptural, yet supremely stylish look reminiscent of the LaFerrari’s cockpit. These ultra-taut surfaces are deliberately layered and broken up to create voids with the result that the main elements seem to float. The overall effect is a delicate balance of thoroughbred racing eagerness and lean elegance that never feels overstated within a car.
